This light was stolen from my bike early in the spring 1996. It has been replaced by the X-light II.

Introduction

The X-Light is a homemade 20 Watt bicycle light system. It was made to replace a simple mass-produced bicycle light, the only purpose of which was to make me visible to others (cars [if they do care to see me, that is] and bicyclists), not to show me where I was going.

To be able to see where I was riding, I had to get something stronger, something with more power. I have Nightsun Team-Issue mounted on my mountain bike that I use for training. The only problem was that its price tag was too high and I did not want to move the light between the two bikes. I needed a light that was much cheaper. After all, the light should be mounted on a bike that I use to commute to work, when going to town etc. The bike is being locked at public places every day. If the light was too expensive, I would lose it faster than it take to discharge its battery!

The Unit

The unit is made from an aluminum tube which has been machined to fit a 20 Watt halogen bulb with built-in reflector. The other end of the tube is closed by an aluminum plate.

A plexiglass sheet and a rubber gasket ensure that no rain will enter the unit. That does not mean the light is waterproof, but it should resist rain and snow without much problem. I have not tested if it resists water or not, because we haven't had bad weather (rain and wind) since I mounted the light on my bike.

Two screw holes have been made to be able to mount the unit on the handlebars. The power wires are taken out through another hole. This hole has a rubber seal to prevent water from getting into the unit. It also prevents the wires from being damanged by the housing (the edge in the hole).

Power to the light!

The unit is powered by a 12 Volt 3.4 Ah sealed lead-acid battery. A fuse and two connectors are mounted on the battery. The battery is placed in a water-bottle cage. The battery can easily be removed by disconnecting the wires and taking it out of the cage (just as you do with a water bottle). Even if the battery isn't round like a bottle, it fits very well in the cage as if it was a round bottle.

The power wires go from the battery to a main switch on my handle bars. The switch has three positions: on, off and on. In the first on-position The X-Light will be on. In the other on-position the old bicycle light is on, which saves energy on longer tours. In both on-positions, The X-Light LED taillight is turned on.
